WHAT YOU WISH YOU KNEW......
By Fran Whyte
It’s the age old question of what do I do when I need a wee? Let’s face it, when nature calls, the struggle is real. This challenge becomes even more pronounced in winter, when the temperatures drop and you find yourself in a battle with layers. We’ve all been there: squatting behind a hedge with your jacket clenched between your teeth, a long-sleeve jersey awkwardly tucked under one arm, and a base layer bunched up around your middle. All while praying you don’t lose your balance, get spotted by a passing farmer, or drop your clothing in the mud! Sound familiar? I know I’ve passed on that post-ride coffee just to avoid the chaos.
The dilemma often makes you consider switching to “normal” shorts—until you remember that chunky waistband that digs in and ruins your ride. But fear not! There’s a solution that turns this bathroom hassle into a breeze.
Enter IRIS bib tights —now available in a gorgeous deep blackberry colour too! I’ve been riding in IRIS bib tights and shorts since they launched in 2017, and I’ve put them to the test on everything from lengthy gravel rides to a more recent bikepacking trip from Cardiff to Bicester. These bibs come equipped with a brilliant magnetic clasp system at the back. This isn’t just a gimmick, that pays lip service to “easy pee” shorts; this ACTUALLY works and it’s a game-changer!
With the IRIS bibs, you don’t need to strip down to your base layers! Just reach behind you, undo the magnetic clip (easy enough to do with one hand), and the stretchy fabric lets you perch gracefully behind a bush without everything hanging out. And when you’re done? The straps easily snap back together thanks to the strong magnet, making the process quick and seamless.
Honestly, I can’t help but wonder why EVERY cycling brand hasn’t adopted this clasp system. No more choosing between uncomfortable waistbands and the dreaded “I really need to pee” situation! Not only that, this simple yet effective solution also addresses a real concern that can cause anxiety for many female cyclists. So, let’s raise a toast (with our water bottles, of course) to IRIS bibs, hassle-free rides and the end of the Bathroom Barrier!
